It has been pointed out to me, rightfully so, that we should have only one central contact point this weekend during the convention in the case of outages, problems, or mass announcements. Since everyone has email, but might not be on dreamwidth, or lj, or discord, the default location is going to be the yahoogroup email list. If there is something that needs to be told to the participants, send it as an email announcement to constrict@yahoogroups.com.

If you are not currently a member of the yahoogroup you can sign up and I will approve your membership (maybe you should email me first if your email address is recognizable as you).

While I imagine other folks might voluntarily forward posts to the other platforms, having to make an announcement on three or four platforms is asking quite a bit and takes time that might be better focused on panels, discussions, and the con.

-- S

comments

The GM at our hotel has graciously let me out of this year's contract and rolled us over to next year. The dates will be July 16-18, which is the weekend before Comic-Con International (San Diego). The room rate will be $89 for a double queen or single king, but we can't actually book rooms more than six months in advance, so don't worry about it for a while. Cross your fingers that the GM will still be Monica then, since she's turning out to be about as nice as Andi.

I will post this update on the yahoogroup and discord; if someone would post it to the lj group, I'd appreciate it.

-- sian

comments

I could definitely see Beckett being sent to Portland to interview someone the Leverage crew is protecting. Or Eliot helping out a military buddy who's being investigated by NCIS. Maybe Parker is a Richard Castle fan, so when the Leverage crew has a job in NYC, she looks him up.

Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Expanse, Honor Harrington, Stargate Atlantis – fusion (but with crossover characters would be fine).

I'm mainly looking MCU characters in spaaace here, but using the season 3 ring in The Expanse and have the crew of the Rocinante end up in the Marvel verse, the Honorverse, or on Atlantis would also work (or the reverse).

Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pern, Black Jewels, D&D – fusiony crossover

The Avengers in any fantasy world. Or, if you can cross the fantasy 'verses, more power to you. Which canon characters from any 'verse are dragonriders and who are the holders or the bards? Or what Jewel would they claim. Steve seems like a Paladin to me, but is Clint a bard, thief, assassin or a ranger? How about Bucky?

Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Expendables; White House Down; A-Team – fusion

Recasting the movies with MCU characters, though they are contemporaries in the technology and type of adventures, so a crossover could also work if you'd rather.

Marvel Cinematic Universe; Magnificent Seven; Pacific Rim; Three Musketeers; Velvet Goldmine; Almost Human; Highlander; Hogan's Heroes; Lucifer -- fusion

My catchall of interesting 'verses that it would be fun to see how you'd cast the MCU characters into. I think I'd really love to see the Avengers in a POW camp, but any of these would make for an interesting story. Again, if you'd rather crossover than fuse, I can go there.

I realize the suggestions are sketchy for many of these possibilities, but H/C or an action story will work for any of them and make me very happy. I'm also open to what your imagination wants to see and provide. Mostly, I would love a MCU story with either crossover characters, or a fusion into another fandom.

Favorite characters/pairings

* (I am fine with a threesome as long as it's two guys and the gal -- and the guys are into each other, not just sharing the gal. If that or slash isn't your cuppa, gen is fine, though I'd like some deep friendships.)

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Clint Barton/Phil Coulson or Clint Barton/Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanova

Leverage: Eliot/Hardison/Parker

Pern: More the verse than the characters. I have favorites, but it depends on which timeline, and I like pretty much everyone, though I do prefer dragonriders to holders or even bards.

Honor Harrington: Andrew LaFollet/Alistair McKeon, Nimitz, Honor

The Expanse: Amos, Alex, Naomi, Holden (don't see them in a slash relationship)

Stargate Atlantis: John Shepherd/Rodney McKay or John/Ronan, Teyla (team)

comments

Maybe Parker is a surfing fan and followed Kono's career, so when the Leverage crew has a job in Hawaii, she looks her up.

Legends of Tomorrow, Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Flash, Pacific Rim
I'm mainly looking for a Pacific Rim fusion. I've read several MCU ones, and one more wouldn't be amiss, but I'd really, really love to see Captain Cold and Heatwave piloting something like Gipsy Danger.

A LoT shift to the MCU during a time jump might also lead to an interesting interaction, kinda an Avengers vs Legends comic book.

Marvel Cinematic Universe , Dragaera, Pern, Black Jewels, Garret PI

The Avengers in any of my favorite fantasy book worlds. Or, as I said in the sign-up, if you can cross the fantasy 'verses, more power to you, but I still think this is a fusion only match-up. Which canon characters from any 'verse are dragonriders and who are the holders,or the bards? Which Great House of Dragaera would they belong to? Or what jewel would they claim. Who's the detective, and who's his/her best friend, who runs the bar, ...?

Or

DC's Legends of Tomorrow/Flash, Dragaera, Pern, Garret PI

Just like the MCU version, I'd love to see my fav Legends/Flash characters in one of these fantasy universes.

Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Legends of Tomorrow, Honor Harrington, Killjoys, Cal Leandros

Fusion of the MCU or Legends Characters into any of these other 'verses -- or a canon character crossover

Perhaps the Killjoys go through a wormhole and end up in the middle of Honor's war?
Cal and Niko get superpowers.
Honor and Nimitz are from Central City or Hells Kitchen, and her crew is the gang they run with.

I realize the suggestions are sketchy for many of these possibilities, but I've tried to provide something. H/C or an action story will work for any of them and make me very happy, but I'm also open to what your imagination wants to see and provide.

Favorite characters/pairings* (I am fine with a threesome pairing in the three first listed fandoms as long as it's two guys and the gal -- and the guys are into each other, not just sharing the gal. If that or slash isn't your cuppa, gen is fine, though I'd like some deep friendships.)

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Clint Barton/ Phil Coulson or Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanova

DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Leonard Snart/Mick Rory, Sara Lance, Jax

Leverage: Eliot/ Hardison/Parker

Hawaii Five-0: Danny/Steve, Kono, Chin (family is Ohana)

Justified: Raylin, Boyd, Tim (I don't really slash anyone here)

Dragaera: Morrolan/Vlad, Aliera, Sethra, Kragar

Garret PI: Morley Dotes/Garrett

Pern: More the verse than the characters. I have favorites, but it depends on which timeline, and I like pretty much everyone, though I do prefer dragonriders to holders or even bards.

Cal Leandros: Niko, Cal, Robin

Honor Harrington: Andrew LaFollet/Alistair McKeon, Nimitz, Honor

comments

2016 Election: A View From the Other Side

Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) has written it better than I ever could and his Facebook response to a follower is below.

Off The Wall

Hey Mike. You’ve been very quiet. Everything OK? I just wanted you to know that I voted for you. I was also hoping you might explain what the hell happened on Tuesday, and say something to make me feel better about my fellow man. Thanks,
Carol Savoy

Hi Carol

Last Friday, my dog posted a video that featured a man licking a cat with the aid of a device that’s designed for the specific purpose of making it easier for people to lick their cats.I’ve been silent ever since, because frankly, I couldn’t think of a better way – metaphorical or otherwise - to express my feelings about this election cycle. The entire country it seems, has been preoccupied with finding a way to lick a cat without actually putting their tongue on it.

Too oblique? Too weird? Ok, how about this analysis:

Back in 2003, a very unusual TV pilot called Dirty Jobs, Forrest-Gumped its way onto The Discovery Channel and found an audience – a big one. For Discovery, this was a problem. You see, Dirty Jobs didn’t look like anything else on their channel. It wasn’t pretty or careful. It took place in sewers and septic tanks, and featured a subversive host in close contact with his 8-year old inner child who refused to do second takes. Everyone agreed that Dirty Jobs was totally “off-brand” and completely inappropriate for Discovery. Everyone but the viewers. The ratings were just too big to ignore, so the pilot got a green-light, and yours truly finally got a steady gig.

But here's the thing - Dirty Jobs didn’t resonate because the host was incredibly charming. It wasn’t a hit because it was gross, or irreverent, or funny, or silly, or smart, or terribly clever. Dirty Jobs succeeded because it was authentic. It spoke directly and candidly to a big chunk of the country that non-fiction networks had been completely ignoring. In a very simple way, Dirty Jobs said “Hey - we can see you,” to millions of regular people who had started to feel invisible. Ultimately, that’s why Dirty Jobs ran for eight seasons. And today, that’s also why Donald Trump is the President of the United States.

I know people are freaked out, Carol. I get it. I’m worried too. But not because of who we elected. We've survived 44 Presidents, and we'll survive this one too. I’m worried because millions of people now seem to believe that Trump supporters are racist, xenophobic, and uneducated misogynists. I'm worried because despising our candidates publicly is very different than despising the people who vote for them.

Last week, three old friends – people I’ve known for years - each requested to be “unfriended” by anyone who planned on voting for Trump. Honestly, that was disheartening. Who tosses away a friendship over an election? Are my friends turning into those mind-numbingly arrogant celebrities who threaten to move to another country if their candidate doesn’t win? Are my friends now convinced that people they’ve known for years who happen to disagree with them politically are not merely mistaken – but evil, and no longer worthy of their friendship?

For what it’s worth, Carol, I don’t think Donald Trump won by tapping into America’s “racist underbelly,” and I don’t think Hillary lost because she’s a woman. I think a majority of people who voted in this election did so in spite of their many misgivings about the character of both candidates. That’s why it’s very dangerous to argue that Clinton supporters condone lying under oath and obstructing justice. Just as it’s equally dangerous to suggest a Trump supporter condones gross generalizations about foreigners and women.

These two candidates were the choices we gave ourselves, and each came with a heaping helping of vulgarity and impropriety. Yeah, it was dirty job for sure, but the winner was NOT decided by a racist and craven nation – it was decided by millions of disgusted Americans desperate for real change. The people did not want a politician. The people wanted to be seen. Donald Trump convinced those people that he could see them. Hillary Clinton did not.

As for me, I’m flattered by your support, but grateful that your vote was not enough to push me over the top. However, when the dust settles, and The White House gets a new tenant, I’ll make the same offer to President Trump that I did to President Obama – to assist as best I can in any attempt to reinvigorate the skilled trades, and shine a light on millions of good jobs that no one seems excited about pursuing. http://bit.ly/2fG1SxI

Like those 3 million “shovel ready” jobs we heard so much about eight years ago, the kind of recovery that Donald Trump is promising will require a workforce that’s properly trained and sufficiently enthused about the opportunities at hand. At the moment, we do not have that work force in place. What we do have, are tens of millions of capable people who have simply stopped looking for work, and millions of available jobs that no one aspires to do. That's the skills gap, and it's gotta close. If mikeroweWORKS can help, we're standing by.

If not, I suppose we'll just have to find another way to lick the cat.

Mike

comments

Dear Writer,

While I know we can be matched on any two of the fandoms listed below, I have skewed my requests to certain fandoms and characters that I'd prefer (the first one or two listed). But that being said, I love all the worlds listed. Any character(s) therein mixing it up with any other character(s) or fandom(s) from the list is bound to be fun

General Information

Loves: Slash. Plot. Hurt/Comfort. Action/Adventure. Worldbuilding. Romance. Tropewise, I like mission gone wrong, de-aging, supernatural or magical elements, animal transformations. Pretty much anything that causes some angst with happy ending.

Likes (in no particular order): Post apocalyptic, established relationships, Regency AUs,

Dislikes: Het*, OOC, PWPs,crack, infidelity or betrayal, death stories, mutilation, gender bending, character bashing, hardcore kink, woobies, curtain fic, mPreg, A/B/O verses, reader or writer inserts, mind control, I don't normally care for school AUs, coffee shop AUs, either, but I've been amazed before -- if you want to do school, please at least make it college so everyone's of age.

My Fandoms

Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Leverage, Pacific Rim

I'm mainly looking for one of the first three fandoms in a fusion with Pacific Rim; while there are loads of MCU/PR fusions out there, one more wouldn't be amiss, though I'd really, really love to see the LoT characters in the Shatterdome.

Conversely, having the Leverage crew be asked to help Marshall Pentecost (or Mako or Raliegh) get a little justice could be cool.

Or having Parker be Leo Snart's little sister instead of Lisa, and him finding out she's become a 'hero' would be fun.

A LoT shift to the MCU during a time jump might also lead to an interesting interaction, kinda an Avengers vs Legends comic book.

Marvel Cinematic Universe , Man From UNCLE, Mission Impossible, RED, Kingsmen,

Spies, assassins and secret agents. I don't see anything failing here

DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Edge of Tomorrow, Firefly, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

I start out thinking about my preferred fandom fusing into another, but as I type I've also come up with all kinds of crossover ideas. So:

Fusion with Legends characters in any of the above 'verses, such as Captain Cold and Heatwave being Butch & Sundance, the Legends characters crewing the Firefly or Sara Lance as Rita Vrataski

'Canon" Legend scenario, with them time jumping to one of these futures/pasts

Butch and Sundance as outlaw/rebels in the future (space or not since it's all future to them)

Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Legends of Tomorrow, Black Jewels, Pern, Temeraire,

Fusion of the MCU or Legends Characters into any of the book 'verses

Favorite characters/pairings* (I am fine with a threesome pairing in the three first listed fandoms as long as it's two guys and the gal -- and the guys are into each other, not just sharing the gal. If that or slash isn't your cuppa, gen is fine, though I'd like some deep friendships.)

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Clint Barton, Phil Coulson, Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanova

DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Leo Snart, Mick Rory, Sara Lance, Jax

Leverage: Eliot, Hardison, Parker

Pacific Rim: Mako, Raleigh, Stacker, Herc

Firefly: Jayne, Mal, Simon, Zoe

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol team

Pern: Dragons, man

Black Jewels: Lucivar, Kindred

comments

Because Alex asked to see others fill it out too (not that I remember all of mine, sorry)

First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:
Alias Smith & Jones -- actually, my sister wrote it with the two of us meeting the guys; I then did some edits and rewrites but, of course, I was about eleven and I'm sure they were crap beyond being the ultimate MarySues.

First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:
Blake's Seven is the first I actively found a convention to attend other than general science fiction cons -- long before on-line existed.

Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read:
Bodie/Doyle (Professionals)

First rps I read:
Hewligan (David Hewlett/Joe Flanigan). First I've gone back to read more -- Alex O'Loughlin/Scott Caan

First fanfiction I read that made me think, YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write, with PORN AND PLOT.
No idea at this point; too many years ago and too many fics

First fanfiction I read that made me think, YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write, really well-written, and also funny, and yet POIGNANT:
Same as above, and also, I don't normally judge other's work by how I wish I'd written it. I had the writing bug long before fanfic.

Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote:
Paul Foster/OFC (UFO)

First FPS OTP:
Bodie/Doyle

First RPS OTP:
O'Loughlin/Caan, but I don't see me ever writing it.

First fandom I wrote in that made me sweat bullets in fear I would fuck it up:
I'm always nervous about posting, but not that concerned about canon since I do excessive amounts of research normally. The one fandom I couldn't reconcile canon to reality so never finished any stories in was Magnificent Seven (TV); the show played too fast and loose with the Civil War/Old West . Oh, I'm doing a fusion fic into the Firefly 'verse that does have me a little anxious since, again, some of the canon reality of the show is more than a suspension of disbelief.

First fanfiction writer I collaborated with:
My sister when we were children. Lori and I were going to do a TPM AU together once.

First fanvid I saw that made me think WHAT IS THIS SORCERY!
My apologies, but I don't remember the presenter's name -- it was a slide show to music since vidding with clips wasn't viable yet ( VCRs were not yet born). Years afterward, in seeing my first vid show, I was simply overwhelmed and hooked with no specific inspiration.

First fannish friend I met in person:
If you're talking first internet fannish friend I met, that might have been Elayna, however I met her before the net, when there were cons and zines to bring fen together. We then rediscovered/reintroduced ourselves to each other on the net. Or is was Melody (& Jim) Rondeau, who I met at roughly the same time, as zine publishers as well as writers/artists.

First fannish friend that invited me to her house:
Again, I think this question is more geared to net friends; first con friends would go back to the 70's, where you didn't have exposure to them in forms other than actually meeting them, and while we lived near each other, home visits and parties were common. I am still friends with some of the folk I met back then, and still friends with many of my net compatriots, and I really couldn't tell you who was first even in net fandom.

Adding a question to the meme because the answer is quite different than my self insertion fantasies (being way too young to know/think about sex back then) and it's weird/funny to think about now -- and to realize that I actually remember:

First celebrity I had a sexual fantasy about:
My first sexual fantasy was a sex dream, about Ice Skater John Curry. No, I don't know why; he wasn't one of my crushes or really my type. I liked ice skating and watched it a lot growing up, but I certain wasn't fannish about it or keeping scrapbooks (that was saved for hockey, baseball and basketball players). Nor was I having sex dreams before then, even if I had *lived* for my celebrity crushes for years.

comments

If you're not current with the first two episodes of this season's Dr. Who, you might not want to finish it (you will have warnings about spoilers -- no spoilers for TW); the Who spoilers go on in example for what she's talking about in the first bits, plus explains something of the difference between UK tv and US tv, which I also found fascinating.

(All of her posts are quite interesting. Her perspective as a scriptwriter, as a female writer in Hollywood, or as a reader/viewer.
